Summary

#Vim Classic Vim Classic is a fork of Vim 8.2 for long-term maintenance. No new feature development is expected. #Why Vim Classic? Vim upstream has begun using generative AI to work on Vim, and the same is true of NeoVim. The use of these tools is irresponsible. The code they generate is of inferior quality to handwritten code, and the externalities and political consequences of these tools cannot be ignored. Generative AI tools impose a great cost on the world for little benefit, dramatically increasing the environmental footprint of the technology industry at a moment when the climate is in crisis. The tech industry now accounts for 2% of global energy use, a figure we need to be responsible for radically scaling back, not recklessly expanding. Generative AI raises energy costs, disrupts wildlife, consumes freshwater resources, and stresses global supply chains, while centralizing power in the hands of a few large technology companies, companies that largely support and enable a rising tide of fascist politics, to receive the backing of the state to assist in building an anti-competitive environment which is incompatible with the values of the free and open source movement. These companies are building an economic bubble that, when it collapses, will disproportionately harm the poor. The use of these tools is an endorsement of these externalities. Vim Classic offers an alternative, which distributes a version of Vim free of these externalities, which does not focus on developing new flashy features but on providing a reliable editor distribution you can use with a clean conscience. Vim 9.0 was the last version of Vim released before Bram passed away, but it included a number of new features that were a bit early in development at this time and require ongoing development to flesh out (in particular, Vim9 Script). Vim 8.2 was selected for this fork as a more conservative basis for long-term maintenance. #Distribution The recommended name for this package is vim-cla...
