CTA Chicago, Illinois The Chicago 'L' is the rapid transit system serving the city of Chicago and some of its surrounding suburbs. Operated by the CTA, it is the fourth-largest rapid transit system in the United States by ridership. The system's name comes from the elevated railways that make up much of the network, though portions also run in subway tunnels, at grade, and in highway medians.
